Last week marked the start of a new school year for Abbey College Cambridge, and with it the arrival of both our new and returning students. In order to welcome them into our community, we ran a busy and exciting programme of orientation activities designed to get them settling into college life and making new friends. The students started off with a trip to the bowling alley just across the road from Abbey College, where they unleashed their competitive spirits and got to know each other better in mixed groups. The very next day they launched themselves with enthusiasm into their packed schedule of induction events, including: Healthy Cooking (learning how to create tasty and nutritious meals from scratch using fresh ingredients with the help of our catering team); ‘Trashion’ Show (working in groups to choose a catwalk model and dress them in a high fashion outfit designed and created using scrap materials and recycling, in order to promote sustainable fashion); and many more activities! The fun didn’t stop there, as a few days later we took our students to the local park to get some fresh air and exercise – very important for effective learning – as well as reinforcing the new friendships they had made. Finally, the students worked together in their house groups to compete in the challenge of building a device to protect a chocolate egg from smashing on its way down from the school roof! The passion and willingness to get involved of all our students has made us particularly excited for the rest of term, and we can’t wait to see what they all get up to. Keep an eye on our social media for more updates!
