Juan Francisco in top 100 from British Mathematical Olympiad

19th January 22

Juan receiving his top 100 British Mathematical Olympiad award

We have the results for the British Mathematical Olympiad Round 1 and are thrilled that Juan Francisco in Year 13 has been placed in the top 100 in the country and has been invited to participate in Round 2.

On Thursday 2nd December four Abbey College Cambridge students sat the British Mathematical Olympiad Round One paper (BMO 1).  The students were invited to participate following their success in the UK Senior Mathematical Challenge in November.  Typically, 1,300 students are entered to sit the BMO1.  It is generally sat by students in Year 13, although some Year 12 students do also qualify for entry.

The challenge consists of a 3½-hour paper with 6 problems requiring full written solutions worth 10 marks each, taken by students in their own schools. The problems are designed to challenge the students and develop their mathematical thinking.

The top 100 participants in this competition are invited to take part in the next round.  This year the cut-off to be invited for the next round was set to be at 33/60.

Juan Francisco achieved an amazing 41/60 and as a result has been invited to take part in BMO2.

“We are super proud of Juan!! He works incredibly hard and this result is a testament to his dedication and hard work.” Robert Stuart, Teacher of Mathematics

The next round takes place on 27th January and as well as challenging high scorers from the British Mathematical Olympiad Round 1, the British Mathematical Olympiad Round 2 is an entry point to the training and selection programme for international competitions.
