Year 9 E-Sports Team Qualifies for World Championships!

18th February 25

Earlier in February, Mani, Ruairi, and David, our incredible Year 9 E-Sports team, showcased their skills on the national stage, competing in the ISA & Diagon E-Sports National Finals in London. After achieving qualification in the regional rounds last term, they battled their way to an impressive 4th place finish—a result that secures them a place in the World Championships in Malta in October 2025!

Held at Lycée International de Londres Winston Churchill, the national finals saw our students take on some of the best young players in the country, including the reigning European champions. In a tense semifinal match for 3rd/4th place, the game went to overtime, showing just how close the competition was. Despite the pressure, our team demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship, staying positive and gracious in defeat.

Their journey was not without challenges—especially with the global PlayStation system outage causing delays—but Mani, Ruairi, and David remained focused and professional throughout the long day.

Ellen Hesse, Principal, commented  “We couldn’t be prouder of the teams’ achievements. Their resilience, teamwork, and exceptional behaviour made them fantastic representatives of Abbey College Cambridge and we wish them good luck in future competitions.

E-Sports offer a wide range of benefits for students and players alike, beyond just gaming. They Enhance Problem-Solving Skills – Competitive gaming requires quick decision-making, strategic thinking, and adaptability. Boosts Memory & Concentration – Fast-paced games improve focus and cognitive flexibility and Encourages STEM Learning – Many games involve physics, logic, and programming concepts, sparking interest in technology and engineering.”

Now, with the World Championships in Malta on the horizon, the team will continue to hone their skills, aiming to take their game to the next level on the international stage.

Congratulations, Mani, Ruairi, and David!
