Abbey College Cambridge proudly welcomed students from local schools and its own community for its second student-led conference on Wednesday, February 28th. The theme, “Equality, Diversity, Inclusivity, and Social Justice,” aimed to delve into pressing issues within education and society.
The event brought together 70 students from various schools including The Perse, St. Bede’s, Landmark International, and Cambridge Academy of Science and Technology (CAST), alongside Abbey Cambridge students from years 10 to 12. Through collaborative activities and discussions, attendees explored topics related to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) and worked together to create and present diversity charters.
A highlight of the conference was a keynote address by Louis Rolfe, a Gold Medal Paralympian and Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). Rolfe shared his inspirational journey, reflecting on the challenges he faced during his school years. He actively engaged with students throughout the day, offering guidance and encouragement during group discussions.
Additional speakers included a courageous talk by one of Abbey Cambridge’s Chinese students, focusing on breaking barriers in sport and education. Beverley, Head of SENDCo at Abbey Cambridge, shared her expertise, while Lucy, House Parent and boarding diversity coordinator, delivered an inspiring talk about her experiences with cerebral palsy.
The conference was entirely organized by student leaders, with Jasra being one of the key organizers. Reflecting on her experience, Jasra emphasized the personal and leadership development opportunities the conference provided. From brainstorming ideas to guiding peers through the diversity charter project, she honed skills such as organization, communication, and teamwork. Most importantly, Jasra witnessed the transformative power of fostering an inclusive environment where every voice was valued.
The event showcased the dedication of Abbey College Cambridge to promoting diversity, equality, and inclusivity within education. By empowering students to take the lead in addressing these crucial issues, the college aims to create a more equitable and supportive learning environment for all.
